“CHAMPS” CELEBRATE 70 YEARS OF THE WAR AMPS KEY TAG SERVICE AT VICTORIA CHILD AMPUTEE SEMINAR

March 14, 2016 – The War Amps 2016 BC Child Amputee (CHAMP) Seminar starts this Friday in Victoria. The Seminar will bring together young amputees and their parents from across BC where they will learn about the latest developments in artificial limbs, dealing with teasing and bullying and parenting an amputee child.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Key Tag Service. To date, more than 1.5 million sets of lost keys have been returned to their owners. Donations to the Key Tag Service fund The War Amps many programs for amputees, including the CHAMP Program, which provides financial assistance for artificial limbs and recreational devices, regional seminars and peer support.

Friday, March 18
6:45 p.m. Welcoming (Crystal Ballroom)
Acting Mayor Charlayne Thornton-Joe will welcome the Champs and their parents to Victoria.
Saturday, March 19
8:50 a.m. PLAYSAFE! (Victoria Conference Centre – Esquimalt Room)
Champs learn how they can become Safety Ambassadors and teach other children how to PLAYSAFE.
10:15 a.m. Healthy Living for Arm Amputees (Crystal Ballroom)
Arm amputees learn how to lead healthy lives, discover a multitude of daily living aids and look at new ways to accomplish everyday activities.
10:15 a.m. Healthy Living for Leg Amputees (Victoria Conference Centre – Saanich Room)
Leg amputees learn how to lead healthy lives and look at new ways to accomplish everyday activities.
1:30 p.m. Amputees in Action! (Crystal Ballroom)
Champs demonstrate their artificial limbs and recreational devices in a “show & tell” format.
Sunday, March 20
8:45 a.m. “What Bugs Me” (Crystal Ballroom)
Open forum session where young Champs talk about and learn to handle difficult issues they encounter like teasing, staring and “too many questions.” Older Champs provide support and advice. This is the final session of the seminar, which sends Champs home with renewed confidence and tools for living with amputation.
