Arm Amputees Play Ball!

Whether it's baseball, basketball, football, volleyball, lacrosse or tennis, there are a wide range of commercially available and custom devices to help arm amputees adapt and enjoy their favourite sports.

Baseball

Custom-made baseball glove device - your prosthetist can design a device to allow hand amputees to hold a baseball glove.

Grand Slam Baseball / Softball Terminal Device, by TRS - allows arm amputees to get a two-handed grasp on a baseball bat. It is suitable for adolescents and adults and can be ordered right- or left-handed, based on what style of batting the amputee prefers.

Hi-Fly Fielder (youth and adult) and Hi-Fly Jr. (child), by TRS - these terminal devices have a flexible mesh pocket which allows fore-handed or back-handed catching without the need for forearm rotation. The Hi-Fly Fielder pocket will accept both softballs and baseballs, while the Jr. is suitable for baseballs only.

Custom-made baseball bat device - your prosthetist can design an arm to hold a baseball bat - the arm is made as one piece - the bat holder is incorporated into the design of the arm.

Power Swing Ring (for a bat), by TRS - a small ring device that easily screws into the end of a wooden bat, and can be used with any hook-type device. It permits a better control of the bat as the artificial limb is also used. Suitable for adults and children.

Basketball, Football & Volleyball

Photo of Mills' Re-bound Pro Basketball HandMills' Re-bound Pro Basketball TD, by TRS - It is made of compliant polymer material,and has a large,flexible palm to allow a good grasp and to simulate hand, wrist and finger-like control of the ball. Friction discs on the surface give more control over the ball when dribbling, catching and shooting. It comes in one model and is suitable for adolescents and adults.

When catching and shooting/volleying the ball, it is helpful if both elbows are in the flexed position. One below-elbow amputee has a custom-made socket with a bend incorporated at the elbow for this purpose. A silicone socket is worn on the inside and a suspension sleeve over top for a secure suspension.

Arm Amputees Play Tennis

Custom-made socket - a special socket device can be constructed to hold the tennis ball so it can be tossed in the air for serving.
