1920-2009

Matthew Gress

Matthew Gress was born on March 4, 1920, near Bromhead, Saskatchewan, and enlisted with the Rocky Mountain Rangers in September 1941. In 1943, he was transferred to the Calgary Highlanders and served in the Aleutian Islands, as well as France. Mr. Gress was injured in July 1944 in Caen, France, when a mortar shell exploded near him, resulting in the loss of his left arm at the shoulder.

He was discharged from service in January of the following year and returned home to Canada, where he joined The War Amps Saskatchewan Branch. During his time with the branch, he served as President and received the Distinguished Service Membership, Meritorious Service Membership and Honorary CHAMP Membership.

Mr. Gress passed away on April 30, 2009.
