Maurice St. Hilaire

Maurice St. Hilaire was born on March 22, 1924, and enlisted with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in April 1943. In March 1945, he was injured from enemy machine gun fire while advancing towards the Reichswald Forest in Germany. This led to the loss of his right leg above the knee.

Mr. St. Hilaire joined The War Amps in 1954, serving with the Winnipeg and Edmonton branches before settling in Victoria. He held the positions of:

  • National Director, Victoria Branch
  • President, Victoria Branch
  • Member, Executive Committee, Winnipeg Branch
  • Member, Executive Committee, Edmonton Branch

  • Meritorious Service Membership, The War Amps
  • Honorary CHAMP Membership

As an active amputee and golfer, Mr. St. Hilaire was an inspiration to other amputees. He was a role model to the child amputees and their families he met at CHAMP seminars and through his involvement with the PLAYSAFE Program.

He received the Distinguished Service Membership, Meritorious Service Membership and Honorary CHAMP Membership for his dedicated service.

Mr. St. Hilaire passed away on November 27, 2016.
