Ernie’s Story

Ernie lost his arm in a farm accident. He was chasing the dog around the farm when he fell onto the blades of a moving grain auger and lost his arm at the shoulder. Soon after his accident, Ernie was enrolled in The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program and has learned how to do all kinds of things with his artificial arm. For fun, he plays football, soccer and video games, and keeps busy with farm chores.

“Machines might move slow, but accidents happen fast. I never thought it would happen to me, until it did. Accidents can happen to anyone, anywhere, so PLAYSAFE!” Ernie

Today, Ernie helps spread the PLAYSAFE™ message and warns other children to spot the danger before they play. The PLAYSAFE Program aims to make children more aware of the dangers in their play environment and The War Amps believes that no one is better qualified to deliver the message than amputees who have lost limbs in accidents while at play, like Ernie.

Your support helps provide child amputees like Ernie with the artificial limbs and peer support they need to thrive.

“We have supported The War Amps for more than 30 years. Then, two years ago, we lost our keys twice in short order. Only two days later, we got an envelope in the mail containing all our keys. Not only is the Key Tag Service fast, but it is also extremely dependable. Thank you so much!” Jack and Nicole
